In transit from Maldives to India, last night we set our clocks ahead 30 minutes. We have made similar changes on other trips, but I never researched the "Why not a whole hour like most of the world?"
My first discovery was that the list of places with a 30- or 45-minute variance from one-hour increments was longer than I expected.
Focusing on India, I have now learned that while India could be divided into three time zones and in the 1800's had two, in 1905, Indian Standard Time (IST) was instituted for the entire country except Bombay (now Mumbai) that operated on a time 39 minutes later than IST until 1955.
While now tempted to drill down into the logic(?) behind the 39-minute difference in Bombay prior to 1955, I shall leave that for another day with a much faster internet connection.
