Dubai

Breathing a sigh of relief that we escaped Boston hours ahead of a winter storm - Pam reminds me this is the third year in a row we have done so - our Emirates flight took off on schedule.  Riding on a Boeing 777, we had an uneventful flight with great cabin service.

A long layover here motivated us to arrange for a room at the hotel within the security area of the terminal.  Stepping off our plane there was someone from the hotel to guide us to it.  This proved most welcome as the airport terminal complex was massive and the hotel multiple twists and turns away.

I keep second-guessing myself on whether we should have done a longer layover so that we could have left the airport to see what by all reports is a fascinating city.  Probably, even though it would have meant retrieving all the luggage and on the back side going through the whole check-in security thing at an ungodly hour of the morning.  Speaking of which...

We have now had a bite to eat and are bunking down for a few hours sleep.  The wake-up call is coming at 2:30, so "few" is literal.

The flight from here to Cape Town is about 10 hours, backtracking two time zones from +4 to +2 UTC.
